Hello! I am considering doing respite or emergency foster care in Alaska.
I am a single nurse that works with infants and my intention would be to do emergency or respite short term fostering of infants, as that would be most fitting with my comfort level and lifestyle.
I want to be a resource family (thats what they call it up here) because in my career I see so many kids that come and go that need carers. Many years ago I looked into it but was put off by thinking it wouldn't fit into my lifestyle as a single, 3 day a week, 12 hour night shift worker. Last year I offered to do a dual foster for friends who were dealing with child protective services, but (thank-God!) she was able to stay with her parents during the entire investigation until closing. It got me really thinking about fostering.
I am just in the intial stages of researching foster care in my state. I won't be able to attend an orientation until late February and I probably won't receive a license (if I go ahead with the process) until late in this year. I may not be a good candidate or fit for foster care, but thats what I want to find out. I have a willing heart, but it may not be right for me or for potential kids and I want to be sure before I commit. I don't take the decision lightly.
While here, I hope I will find some great information and support that will help me make some big decisions.
Also, I have some questions for members:
-If you foster in Alaska, what has been your experience?
-Have you ever done respite or emergency foster? What has been your experience?
-Are you a single foster parent with a career? What has been your experience?
-Have you researched foster care but not gone through with getting a license? Why?

Yes I currently am a Foster Parent here in Alaska and my experience have been great. I have had to balance work and family but it was manageable. I have done respite care and it has its ups and downs but its all worth it at the end. I think you will be a good foster mom and help make a positive difference in that childs life.
