My husband and I would like to adopt from foster care possibly three years from now. We are considering living in the country, homesteading and investing in my sister's farm and smaller natural products company. The thing is that they also grow legal medicinal marijuana. Their plants are located out of sight behind solid fencing to prevent any people from seeing or stealing. We probably wouldn't be helping them do whatever with them and there are absolutely no children allowed near that area.
We would likely be on land near, if not next to, their property. Could this affect our ability to adopt? We want To be completely honest with whoever we work with.
As long as this is a legal operation I can't see how it would be a problem. Also, it sounds like that would not really be about you, since you say you wouldn't be doing anything with them. You say that your home would be next to their property; I suppose it could make a difference how close you are to the marijuana field; if you are immediately next to that, they might have concerns. You also have not said what age you are hoping to adopt; I could see a social worker having concerns placing a teenager in that environment, especially if they have any history of substance use or have a lot of risk factors for substance use (which many teens in foster care do).

Probably no older than 9 or 10 IF substance abuse wasn't a problem and they weren't taken from a home where people smoked. We were willing to accept teenagers with excellent behavior before but thats now out of the question just in case.
