Hi. This is my first post. My husband and I are going into week three of our parenting classes. We are trying to get our house ready for our home study. We originally said we would accept children 0-8, male or female but we've talked A LOT and have decided that since we are first time parents that an infant would be a better placement for us and our home. That being said, we are VERY CONFUSED as to what we need to have done in our home. We got a "checklist" but while in class the other day they told us about other things that are required that ARE NOT on the checklist!!! SO FRUSTRATING. Items like outlet covers, carbon monoxide detectors etc. are not on the checklist. HOW HOW HOW are we supposed to know what to have done if there's no exact list of requirements. It is our goal to adopt and not have a revolving door in our home. We were TTC for five years with failed IVF....so we are hoping to start from the beginning with an infant/newborn.
We had an infant placed with us. we put covers on the outlets, safety locks on all the cabinets and draws that are child level. door handle locks on the bathroom and bedroom doors. stair gates. oven and stove safety locks. check the hot water temp not too hot. smoke alarms in each room and a carbon monoxide detector. make sure blinds dont have cords hanging. most of the safety stuff cant be bought at target or home depot. they sell a pack with a bunch of stuff. we also got the coffee table bumpers. good luck.

To tag onto what Nooner said we also had to have fire extinguisher on each floor and since we had a second floor at our house we had to have a fire ladder that can be used to escape out a window. The cabinet locks we had to get were the ones that use a magnetic key to open. If you are taking any child that may be disabled you need to have a 7 day survival kit in the home. You will have one home inspection that is not a final one and they will point out things that need to get done before the final one. Don't stress to much. Also if you have to have a room ready make sure to have a dresser of at least 3 drawers for each child and mattress covers on each mattress in the kids rooms. Good luck!
Thank you for your input ladies! I wish they would just give you a list of necessities so that you are prepared. But it seems that they make the process a little harder in order to weed out the people who aren't really committed to the process. At least that is the conclusion that my husband and I have come to. Moving forward is always good. Thank goodness for this forum.
Make sure you have tweezers in your first aid kit and screens on all your windows. That's why we didn't pass our licensing inspection the first time. Lol. I have a list somewhere from my FFA. I will try and find it for you.
