Hi, My fiance and I have had his grandaughter since she was 3 months old. Her birth mother and father both took drugs. Mom used meth, bath salts marijuana and cocaine along with prescription drugs. Our little girl has always had times when she would scream uncontrollably. She is now 2 1/2 years old and is very strong willed. when she doesnt get what she wants she hits and pinches and screams. Also from the time she was born she would eat and drink really fast and if allowed she would drink until she got sick. She eats so fast that she has choked because she doesnt take time to chew. The doctor and a therapist told us that any effects of the drugs are long gone and now she is just being her. She is very smart and is past other children her age in learning. She can be very sweet but can get mad quickly. Physically she is doing great except she is extremely short. Anyway, should I continue to look for help or are the doctor and therapist right.
As you pointed out in the thread I started, our kids have a lot in common!
We were very lucky that our son's foster mom was very experienced with drug exposed infants and had every specialist and service possible lined up for him. He sees a neurologist once a year, just to make sure there are no lingering developmental problems. She says he's doing great except for his speech articulation and says we should keep him in as many therapies like speech and OT as we can for as long as we can. She says that even though he's fine now, you never know what might be happening in there and the therapies will help keep him developing in the right direction.
So I am doing my best to balance the specialists saying he's healthy and doing great with figuring out what therapies he can benefit from and of course making sure they're covered by insurance/subsidy.
I would find an OT who deals with sensory issues and oral motor issues in particular and get an evaluation done. If you need a referral, start with the ped and get one for OT and one for a neurologist too. There are also developmental peds who might be more helpful than a regular one, but we haven't gotten that far yet.
Short answer: I'd continue to look for help...
