Some people REALLY just don't understand! I just got asked by work if I am able to travel during the week for the next few months. Here's how the conversation went:
Them: Can you do this project where you are out of town all week and home on the weekends?
Me: I can't commit to that because I'm hoping for an adoptive placement.
Them: Well could you travel 4 days a week?
Me: No
Them: How old are you hoping to adopt. Oh, good, not an infant that needs you around the clock. How about 3 days a week.
Me: I can't commit to any days a week without knowing if I'll have a child placed with me.
Me (in my head): Um, how about no days a week anywhere, since I'm legally entitled to use all my PTO (and I have several weeks saved up) plus FMLA. And I totally intend to, if I'm fortunate enough to have a placement.
I know I can't expect anyone in then non-adoption world to really understand everything, but I DO think it is common sense that if you have a new child, it is NOT ok to see them only on the weekends. Geesh.

Thanks for asking. No luck with a placement yet, but maybe doing respite for 3 (!) Next weekend! And to be fair to my boss, he came to my office later in the week and offered his full support and asked me what he can do to help. I think he must have talked to someone who gets it a little more.
