Another thread got me thinking, but I didn't want to hijack that thread. My DS is approaching 21, and I'm torn about whether or not to look into SSI/disability. He is working and doing very well, but I'm not sure if he will be able to make a living wage.
He doesn't think of himself as disabled, and I don't want to label him or to teach him to use public assistance if he doesn't need to. He is fully capable of continuing to work, and when he is eventually on his own, I am prepared to supplement his income so he can live comfortably.
However, knowing how hard it is to qualify for SSI/Disability as an adult, would I be hurting him in the long run if I don't look into it?
definitely look into it--- even if you are able to supplement his income you can't provide insurance into further adulthood. People who qualify for SSI also qualify for Medicaid. No harm in looking into it but he may suffer if you don't

Just to second the other poster, definitely no harm in looking in to it! You might feel more strongly one way or the other after looking in to it :)
I'm going to third what others have said. You can qualify for it medically but then not use it if he earns too much. Better to do it now than later.
