Hi, my spouse and I are looking for some guidance here from anyone who is familiar with NYC foster home regulations/requirements. We found a great organization that we did our MAPP training with. When the organization came to our home to do the 1st home visit (the step before the home study) we were told that we cannot proceed because the only bathroom in our 1 bedroom apartment is located in our bedroom. We have a separate living room from our bedroom. One would have to walk through our bedroom to enter the bathroom which has a door providing privacy. We want to foster a child under 3 years of age, and the organization knows this. I don't see why this is an issue and cannot find anything mentioning this rule in the NYC foster guidelines. Can anyone help me??

hey,
i'm not in NYC or anywhere near it, but i do know that there is a huge need for fps there. my suggestion is to contact another agency or the state. rules do differ from group to group, and you may just have a picky one. the state can give you the actual requirement for location and size of required rooms.
i wish you luck!

You will find out that NY. is one of the hardest states to get your certification. If you have the luck of getting a CW that is closed minded . It will be easier to walk on water than becoming a foster parent. I have been jumping through hoops to get my licence. They love to find the most smallest thing to block the path for a person to help one of these children. But If memory serves me correct , the law does require a separate bathroom. other than one that is connected to a bedroom unless it adjoining the foster child's room also. But I wish you the best in your journey it will be full of blessings and head aches that you wouldn't trade or give up for all the money or aspirin in the world
