My husband and I are the legal guardians for my grandson, age 2. We have had him since birth. His mother is in agreement to us adopting him, but we just cant afford the legal fees to do this. My husband will be retiring soon and with retirement would mean the end of insurance for our grandson unless we adopt him.
He was diagnosed with autism six months ago and goes through four different therapists five days a week. We really canҒt afford to lose the insurance, but cant seem to save up the money required for legal fees. We were hoping that maybe through foster to adopt, maybe we could find help to legally adopt him. Is this something we can take part in or will we have to find another path? Does having legal guardianship for him negate the possibility of our being able to adopt him through the countyҒs program?
I may be wrong but I don't think that you can foster to adopt unless the case goes through DCFS.
However, your grandson may qualify for Medi-Cal. Have you looked into that?

I would apply for SSI for your grandson if he has an autism diagnosis and is seeing therapists on a frequent and regular basis. He would also get insurance and the SSI payment would help with the costs of transportation, any equipment he might need to help him on a daily basis, etc.
