Not sure where to start

I have kind of an odd situation. My boyfriend and I are engaged. My son is 7 and has never met his father, nor is he on the birth certificate. He was murdered about a year ago before paternity could ever be established and was adopted. My soon to be husband would like to adopt our son and make him officially our son but I don’t know where to start or what to do in a situation as odd as mine.
