Meg, there are so many reasons that adoption is a good thing. I'm an adoptive mom of twin girls, so obviously I'm a little biased. But, my husband and I tried to have our own child and, for some unknown reason, we were not able to. Since it was more important to us to be parents than to be pregnant, we chose to pursue adoption rather than in vitro fertilization (which is extremely expensive). Our girls' birthmom had a 2-month-old baby when she became pregnant with the twins. She could have had an abortion, but she felt that was the wrong choice. She knew she couldn't provide the twins with everything she wanted for them, so she made the very painful choice of making an adoption plan. So, for us, adoption was the answer to having children, our birthmom's answer to an unplanned pregnancy, and our daughters' answer to being "terminated." Hope this helps you out. Megan please research OPEN adoption to share with your class. Openness can be good. There is so much pain that children & adoptees go through in closed adoption that I can not say that it is good. Read the poetry on the adoption community board on this site.You will feel the pain of the closed system.
