Till this date, neither the I-600A nor the I-600 have been received by us. Are there any attorneys that can help us in this issue with the INS ? Thanks.

It takes anywhere from 30 to 90 days for pre-approval of the I-600A form. It is not returned to you. You are sent Form I-171H to confirm your pre-approval.
Likewise the I-600. You will know that it was approved when they indicate that you will need to fill out form DS 230 Application for Immigrant Visa.
You don't usually need an immigration attorney, but since you seem to be filing two forms at the same time that are usually done separately, your case might be indicate an attorney. Be sure that you get one that is acquainted with orphan immigration, though. Most of them only know about adult immigration, which is a lengthy ordeal. Orphans have priority.

Did anyone already sent the USCIS I-600A form? My question is if photocopies and a personal check are fine or if it needs to be notarized with a certified check? Also I read somewhere that you should put your SSN on the form even though there is no field asking for the SSN.
