Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience or advice on how to handle the following situation: My daughter brought her son to Human Services of Wyoming because she was out of work, and homeless. She agreed to a 6 month reunification agreement. At the end of the 6 months it was determined that she had not followed her plan and that the child would not be returned to her at that time. My husband and I didn't find out until October of 2001, she had brought the child in to their custody in July of 2001. We immediatly contacted DFS of WY. and made it clear that we wanted to take custody of the child, and asked what steps needed to be taken. We had a homestudy done immediately, and passed with flying colors. The social worker in WY led us to believe that he would be placed with us. After many continuances, and a Medical Disciplinary Team meeting where it was decided that the child should be placed with us (July 2002), the permancy placement hearing took place in August 2002. We have had a couple of visits with our grandson who turned 3 in July. They went extremely well. On our first meeting with the foster parents they made it very clear that they felt he should stay with them, and that they wanted to adopt him. So, the permancy hearing came along, and it was decided that he should stay with the foster family (we live in Iowa). The foster parents stated that when he returned from his last visit with us that he was very upset, unruly, and wouldn't perform routine tasks such as going to daycare, etc. The judge would not allow us to speak at the hearing, because we were not "party to the action". So, he's been with the foster parents for more than 15 months, we believe they will be looking to terminate my daughter's parental rights in the coming new year. They have since taken custody of our grand-daughter who is 8 months old. So, my question is, does anyone have any suggestions on how we can get custody of our grandson? We have a lawyer involved, but she doesn't hold much hope. Any advice is welcom. Sorry this is so long. Thank you.
