I am in the process of adopting from the state. I have 2 children. It has taken over 2 years and still not final. My children are not birth siblings so we have to do seperate adoptions. Things were not moving at all until we got an attorney. Caseworkers came and went, paperwork was lost...we did three homestudies because the people contracted by the state never completed the writeups. Once our attorney got involved things went much quicker. The good part was that we did have physical custody of the children. Do you have the children and are just waiting for the paperwork, or are you waiting for children?

Florobin,
I am doing a state adoption through DC though I live in Maryland. Yes it is considered out-of-state but I live only 20 minutes away from DC. My process began in October 2002 and my daughter should be in my house by late Spring or this summer. I think that the difference is that my child is older, ten years old going on eleven, and I began to pursue her, via her SW, as soon as I started the process. Initially, I did not realize that you should complete the homestudy and classes prior to 'selecting' a child.
We have been fostering for 19 months and are finally about to adopt our first baby (now 2 1/2). When he came to us we were told that his case was going straight to adoptions. However, things did not work out that way at all. We have had to fight our way through three parents...none who were really willing or able to care for him. Finally, the last parent signed surrenders two weeks ago. We had already finished our adoption packet late last year and now we just have to wait for the 30 day waiting period and then the adoption packet to be signed off on and we get our date for adoption. We are told it should be in mid April. We are elated!
I will tell you that if you have good workers who are diligent in working the cases, if you stay on top of all the people concerned, and fight it can happen. It has been a long hard road and believe it or not we are doing it again with another little guy we have only had for a few months...it seems that his case is moving faster since their will be a TPR advisory in March, but I am not getting my hopes up to high. Things can change so rapidly in these situations. So, we wait and pray.
It is absolutely worth the wait!!! Don't give up...stay informed and stay in contact with all the workers. The squeaky wheel truly does get the oil in many of these cases.
I hope this helps you!
