You'll see on the left hand side you'll see a link Birth Certificates and Adoption this tells you how to apply and the cost ($15NZ)
Suzzane, at this site it gives you the information you need to get a copy of your original certificate. Once you have names it is much easier to trace, and I'm sure someone will volunteer to locate them if possible. Only you can apply for your certificate. But if you need help once you have that, it isnt hard, even I would be happy to help you once I return to New Zealand.

I too was adopted from NZ (in 1970) and now live in BC (since 1972). I made contact a few years ago with my birth mum.
I contacted the NZ Gov't Children, Young Persons & their Families agency, and made contact with their Adoption Information & Services Unit.
I had to fill out an application form, and pay a small fee (NZ $15) in order to receive my original birth certificate (has your birth name, your birth mums name & your birth fathers name (if recorded)). When you apply for your Original Birth Certificate, inform them you reside in Canada permanently, and would they please forward the certificate directly to you.
Once I received the certificate, I then requested the Adoption Information and Services Unit attempt to make contact with my birth mum on my behalf.
Once the gov't agency located a woman who was most likely my birth mum, I requested that a NZ social worker act as an intermediary, and attempt to make contact on my behalf. I was hesitant to make contact, as I did not want to cause her undue hardship. I sent a letter & photo's for the social worker to give to my birth mum.

My end result was a positive experience. I now have a half brother & half sister (I gues I always did!). Now my quest is to locate my birth father. As nothing was recorded in my Adoption file, and my birthmum is hesitant to tell me anything - this could take awhile..!
Hope this helps in your quest.
