Husband wants to adopt my son

I live in Southern CA and my husband would like to adopt my 2 1/2 y/old son. We've been married for just over a year. My son has never met his father -- he left when I was 7 mths pregnant and only emailed me once after I had the baby to say congratulations. I have not heard from him since. I haven't moved, still have the same friends -- who know how to contact me -- so he knows how to get a hold of me. My question is, how do I go about getting my husband to adopt my son? Is the bp's rights terminated because he's been out of the picture (never really was actually) for so long. I have no way of contacting him because he's moved and although he knows how to contact my friends, they don't know where he is either. I'm really confused at how to go about everything and would really appreciate any help provided. Thanks Kristin
