You Know, we are all in the same boat when it comes to the financing. I know when we decided, partially based on finances, not to pursue IVF, and go with adoption, I had no idea of the costs involved, and was absolutely crushed, thinking there was no way it could happen for us...Somehow, I am amazed myself, we have been able to save up the needed $ over the last few years by me taking on an extra weekend/evening job , but another idea has crossed my mind, espescially because after we have our baby, I would like to have 1 or 2 more, and I cant really be working 60 hours a week then...so, I wonder if a co-op for adoption fundraising has ever been formed...here's how it would work:
Pre-adoptive families join togther to organize fundraisers, everything from chili-cookoffs, brat frys, car wash, rummage sales, golf outing maybe a major, large scale event such as a art auction or wine tasting. Instead of applying to recieve a grant, participating hopeful adoptive Parents would recieve a portion of the funds raised on the event, in accordance with the number of hours volunteered. I am employed as a non-profit fundraiser, so I have lots of ideas for the events. I think some things could be hung up by not having 501c3 (charity) status, but many could work. Does this sound like it could possibly work? Has anyone ever heard of/done this??? Any ideas?
My husband and I are a military couple who more than anything want to find a way to raise money to adopt children who are out there waiting for us.
I find that your suggestions are very inspiring. My husband have often wondered how we would do that. Like seeing if a local bowling ally would allow us to reserve their ally for a day to raise funds. But I think a car wash would be more practical. If you have any more ideas PLEASE let us know!

Sounds like a great idea. How would you go about doing something like this? I have no experience doing anything of the sort. The closest I've come is attending a "pug dog fundraiser" to help with the cost of adopting pug dogs. They made a ton of money that day! I can only imagine how this idea would take off being so much more important (not that the other is not important, but let's face it, you just can't compare the two). Any advice on how to do it in California?
Thanks,
Mrs.Brown
i think you could start in a number of ways, maybe the easiest by hosting your own fundraiser of any sort, and inviting friends, family, co-workers. I think the coolest thing would be to gather a group of individuals hoping to adopt, in your area....probobly the way to get them together would be to put signs up at adoption agencies, contact adoption support groups, etc., and invite interested persons to a brainstorming meeting....
Not spamming! I'm just trying to let you guys all know because we raised over $5K in the last 6weeks or so! We had NO idea what we were doing and we got their Adoption Fundraising Ideas book from

They're a nonprofit so there's no scamming, and seriously the book is great -- they had lots of ideas and HOW to do them!
I hope this helps! I think the co-op idea could be really interesting! I think it's parentsoup.com or parentsplace.com that has boards divided by locations and maybe you could use something like that to hook up with other potential adoptive parents in your community. Just an idea. Suze
