This is a story of the 2nd world war; there must be many similar stories, this one is unique because its my moms. The story is told through her.
'My mother, a petit lady under 20 yrs old, living near Abbots Nangely in hertfordshire, england during the second world war, met and fell in love with my father, a tall, dashing French Canadian, stationed at Abbots Langely 1942/43. Much of their story is a little sketchy as I only managed to find my mother some 40 years later. After all the usual tracing procedures, we met in November 1985. I was born in Watford and given up for adoption immediately. My adoptive father was a Major in the British Army and away fighting the war. It fell to my mother and maternal grandmother to bring me home the first time, to Uxbridge in Middlesex. My mother (adaoptive) name was Gladys Enid Bray, and she had wanted a little girl for some time. She had a son 6 years before, anmed Keith. After a hystorectomy, she was unable to have more children, and adoption was decided upon, and by her own accounts, she loved the dark haired baby on sight. She names me Susan. On meeting my biological mother, she told me I was the image of my father. I have always wanted to look like someone - I am 5ft9, pitch black hair and pale skin. She threw away all the information she had regarding my father. However, she told me that his name was Daniel Du Marc, he was from MOntreal, and his family owned a tailoring shop. He had a sister, Deanna. Is there anyone that perhaps knew my father or his sister? Please reply to my email or post a message, if this rings a bell! Life is so full of strange destinies and co-incidences, I feel it is quite possible that someone, somewhere will know my fathers family. With love and with hope, Susan 23.3.03
Hi- I just checked the phonebook and found no "Du Marc"s. Are you certain of the spelling? There are MANY "Dumas" and even a "Dumar". Let me know and I can do more look-ups for you.

Thank you so much for replying! I have almost given up! We are not entirely sure of the spelling, as my mothers biological mother was not sure herself. What we do know is that he had a sister called Deanna, and his family owned a tailor or dry cleaning shop in montreal. We have tried so many different versions of the name. I would so appreciate it if you could look further!
thank you again - youve made my day!

Hi Samantha,
I am happy to help. Would you like me to send you more phone numbers? I must tell you that the name "Dumas" here in Quebec is like "Smith" - there are hundreds listed... I am going to try to find one of the names and occupations in a City Directory- that may get you closer, but I do not want to give you false hope- without being sure of the spelling, there is obviously a large margin for error. I am going to have to just try any name that sounds similar and then go from there... It may take me a while to get to a library, but I will ask a friend who goes frequently. Just know that it is not easy to look up a name that you are unsure of, so hang in there! Never give up.
If you come up with more facts or think of anything else, just e-mail me!
Kelly
Dear Kelly,
I have to start with another huge thank you! We have been trying for so long, and you are really the first person to show such interest in helping us! I would offer to buy you a coffee, but Johannesburg is rather far out for you to travel for a cuppa!
As far as any further info, all we have is what I initially wrote. I now know that it was not a dry cleaner store, but definately a tailor shop his family owned. Our only link is his sister Deanna. I can get a photo of my mother for you if you think it would help, aparently she is the spitting image of him and his sister, maybe if someone saw it, it would trigger something?
I dont mind phoning from here if you find some numbers you think may be a contact. Please let me know what the time difference is though, i am sure a call at 2 in the morning would not go down well!
Thanks!
Sam
