My mother, Betty Cylka (Hamden) supposedly gave birth to a child in Detroit, Michigan somewhere between 1948 to 1952. She lived near Pershing High School in Detroit, and dropped out of school some time in 1947. The story is told that she became pregnant, and gave the child up for adoption. The Father died during the Korean War.
I know this is a tiny bit of information, but I have had no luck searching for this child, who may or may not want to know his or her siblings.
If this story rings a bell to anyone, pleae contact me. Mother's full name is Betty Lou Cylka (aka Hamden).
Thank you to all who read this,
Chuck Hamden

Thank you very much for your reply. I hope the information below will be of help.
This story was relayed to me from relatives (my father's sister), and I deem it to be reliable. My mother, Betty, has denied this story, but I believe it to be true.
Betty Cylka (aka Hamden) was born on April 23, 1930 and died on Feburary 11, 2003. In the years 1951-1952, she would have been approximately 5'6" and around 120 pounds. She had Blonde hair and Blue eyes.
Do you know anything about Adoption records in the state of Michigan? I have no idea how someone would get these records opened.
I do hope this information may be helpful. Again, thank you for your response.
My step-father was born May, 1951 in Wayne County, Detroit, MI. He has blue eyes and dark hair. Soung familiar?
Please e-mail me Greeneyeswmu@yahoo.com
Thank you for your response.
Below, as on the Adoption website, is the physical description of my mother:

As reported from my Aunt, the father of her child was reportedly killed during the Korean War. It was when my parents were trying to buy a house that the question was asked to her about VA loans and benefits that this came up. Since they were never married, she would not have been eligible.
She attended Pershing High School in Detroit, but dropped out in 1947. Her father died of Cancer in 1954, and this could have been the reason she dropped out, or she might have been pregnant at the time. The truth as to why she dropped out was never told.
I do not know if any of this helps, but I do appreciate your note...thanks
I am helping my mother search for her birth family. I know you posted what you knew, but My mother was born out of borgess hosp. But everything else that you have posted is what her non id says.
Could you possibly tell me the month and the day of the birth? And how many brothers and sister your mother had.
thanks alot.

Debbie,
Unfortunately I do not know when this birth took place. My mother would always deny this, but I believe this birth did take place. My father and my AUnt both confirmed this in other discussions, and my AUnt ahs told me personally. I cannot get my father to confirm this since he has already passed.
I do not know where Borgess Hospital is, but it may be in the vicinity of Pershing High School, where my mother was raised.
She had two older brothers, Robert and Herbert, as well as a younger sister, Bernice. Both of her brothers served overseas in World War II. Herb was severly injured, and left for dead by the Germans. He was found and recovered from his injuries he received.
I hope this helps your Mother. Again, the last name would have been Cylka at the time, and her parents names were John and Elizabeth.

Betty was born on April 23, 1930 and dropped out of Pershing High School in 1947 (would have graduated in 1948). She never gave areason for dropping out, she was a very secretive person. After dropping out of High School, she worked as a secretary for Betty Crocker in Detroit. She married my father in 1953.
Her brothers, Robert and Herbert Cylka, were approximately 2 and 4 years older, which would have Robert, the oldest, born around 1926 and Herbert around 1928. Both, as stated above, would serve in World War II. Her sister Bernice was approximately two years younger, so the time frame would have been around 1932. As far as I know, Herbert and Bernice are still living, while Robert died of Cancer in 2002.
Per the story I have been told, the father served in the Military during the Korean War, but was killed in action. This is how the story came out. It was when my parents were trying to buy a house that the question was asked to her about VA loans and benefits that this came up. Since they were never married, she would not have been eligible.
Since, during this time frame, it was considered "scandelous" to have a child out of wedlock, they may have gone to Kalamazoo (which I am guessing that Borgess Hospital is after doing a web search). Again, this is only a presumption.
I do live in Michigan, and again, I do not know much about Michigan Adoption laws. And since I would not be the birth parent, the State of Michigan would not have any requiremnt to look for any information for me.

Just an FYI for those searching in Michigan - Though Michigan is a closed birth records state, there is a wealth of information available at the Library of Michigan in Lansing about marriages and divorces. It's worth a trip to Lansing if you have some names and approximate dates to look for.I'm going tomorrow or Saturday to do some research, so if there's something I can look up for you (check the website I linked to and verify that the years/information you want are covered), PM me and I'll be happy to dig around for you as well.

AND SOMETIMES THESE RECORDS HAVE THE BIRTH MOTHER OF FATHERS NAME ON THEM. WHEN I DID IT..I HAD MY DOCTOR FILL IT OUT. HE EVEN HAD IT NOTORIZED! AND HE REQUESTED MY BIRTH RECORDS. SO...GIVE IT A TRY AND BUTTERWORTH HOSPITOL HAS A NEW NWME ...SPECTRUM ...HOSPITOL. IF YOU NEED THE ADDREWSS ..ILL LOOK IT UP.
