Biography
Scully was born in Seattle, where her parents had recently moved from Nome, Alaska. The family moved to San Francisco not long afterwards. When she was seven her father committed suicide, after losing all the family's money to a confidence man, and Julia and her older sister discovered his body. Her mother left the girls in the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum while she returned to Nome to begin life again. Two years later, in 1940, the family was reunited in Nome. After high school she went to Stanford University.
She was editor of Modern Photography for 20 years.
