Public Adoption Agency: This is a term that refers to a rather broad group of state and county adoption agencies that bear a wide variety of names, depending on the particular provisions of the laws in their state, such as The Department of Human Services, The Department of Social Services, and The Department of Children and Family Services. These agencies are responsible under the provisions of state law for placing waiting children from foster care or other institutional care settings into the homes of adoptive families. They are generally funded by state tax dollars, although they may also receive federal tax support, and can place their children with adoptive families that live in or out of their state.
