Lisa Ling talks with birth mother, Sophie, about her decision to place her child for adoption. Katie and Ben were chosen as the adoptive parents. Having been through the process of open adoption once before, their familiarity with the situation made Sophie that much more comfortable with her decision.

Two years later, Sophie is still thrilled with her decision. She has been able to have open communication with her birth son while still recognizing that Katie and Ben are his parents.

Today about 90% of adoptions contain some degree of openness. It is becoming more and more common for birth parents to have a place in their biological children’s lives.
