Mother's Day wasinstituted as a special day of commemoration on May 9th 1914, Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) the twenty-eigth president of the United States, proclaimed that the second Sunday of May would be disignated as Mother's Day.
All endeavors start from one person, from a single pioneerThe individual who set the wheels in motion for Mother's Day was a Miss Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As a young girl, Miss Jarvis had suffered a painful disappointment in love, it is not inconceivable that, in her despair, she may of have even contiplated suiside. However, she choose to live , realizing that she should live her own life that she had a right to be come happy. Rising above her heartache and grief, she turned out her affections toward her mother and her blind younger sister.
On the anniversary of her mother's death she would hand out white carnations; her mother's favorite flower';to the people her church congregation The gratitude that she felt toward her mother was something she could not keep to herself. One day she came upon the idea of having a special day where anyone
could show their love for their mother,. She started writing thousands of letters to women 's groups and influential people to pleed the case for the institution of a special day for theis purpose ....and then the responses were overwhelming and the idea grew and alot of people liked her idea, and so on May 10th 1908 Philadelphia observed Mother's Day for the first time as a state event , with the U.S. president issuing his proclaimation.
Traditionally, if a mother is still living, her children present her with a red carnation, and if she has passed away they wear a white carnation. This custom of originated fron the beautiful heart of a lady who loved, as a symbol of her own mother, the flower her mother had adored.
"However, mothers libe on in the hearts of their children"
A nameless woman's call triggered reverberations that spread throughout the country, and eventually to the world, Why should this be so? I believe the answer is that people, regardless of nationality, cherish in the depths of their hearts a sincere love for their mothers . Anna Jarvis struck a chord in their hearts, which combined to create a beautiful cadence of sympathy and profound emotion.
There are various veiws on the origin of Mother's day . One points to a myth in Asia Minor and another ascribes it to a Christian holiday, such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom. In actualiy , however, the American account of it's origin that I have cited is regarded as the only one to be supported bye clear historical evidence.
