Hi -
I have a foster daughter who is mentally limited. She is soon to be 18, but still a few years away from graduating high school. I will be asking for an extension when she turns 18 to allow her to stay in care until she graduates.
She requires a LOT of guidance. My husband and I are concerned that once she does leave the foster system we don't know who is ultimately responsible for what happens to her next. She will need assisted living, and will not be able to hold much more than a minimum wage job. She can't handle her finances, and needs constant guidance day to day.
We have been repeatedly approached to adopt or do legal guardianship. Due to her special needs we feel unable to assume a lifelong responsibility for her (we've had her 4 years). Although we plan to remain her family resource, we do not want to assume the burden of her daily care. We have five other children, biological, adoptive and foster.
Trying to get info out of caseworkers has been difficult. To them it isn't pressing enough with her only being a Junior. But my husband and I would like some idea of what to expect.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Thanks
Denise
