I have an 11 years old Foster child, and I'm having lots of problems being able to attach to him. Can someone help me with this problem. Is it me or my foster son?
Hi Jesse,
I just heard something today that stated you should not send a child into counseling alone when they have this , but to go with them.
We are having trouble after a yr. 1/2 still bonding with a 3 1/2 and 9 yr old. We are trying to get the state to help us, by letting us take counseling together. The 9 yr old has been in seperate counseling for over a yr. without me and has bonded so well to her male counselor, that she will not even answer our questions in home.
Anyway, so I heard that counseling together with an attachment specialist would be a great place to start, so this is what I have been trying to work on now for them.

At 11, the child is bound to have a lot of trauma in his past. He has likely learned not to trust and that love hurts. The more love you give, the harder he is rejecting. It is not you. He needs time and therapy with you if possible to heal from his trauma.
In such situations you need to get professional treatment for you and the child. You need a licensed mental health professional who is trained and certified to work with adopted and foster children with attachment difficulties.
Typically, attachment-based treatment invovles both parent and child and is usually delivered in two hour sessions. YOu can find someone in your area at ATTACh
