Did you ever receive any information? I would also be interested in an independent adoption from Bulgaria.

I recently adopted from Bulgaria through an agency.
With the laws that recently went into effect in October, I'm not sure that you can do and independant adoption. I know that there was quite a bit of talk about licensing.
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I was adopted, and my husbands father was from Bulgaria, so I thought I would adopt from Bulgaria. I just don't want to spend the money for the supposingly... 'process'. I would rather donate the money to the orphanage than to give it to an agency. We are thinking about flying over this spring and meeting with some people at the embassy.
I appreciate the response and info...
Be very careful about the donation to an orphanage. Bulgarians are very leery of corruption or any implication of corruption. A large donation could come across that way.
I know under the new regulations, the government will be making referrals, not agencies or orphanages.
It would be best to contact a lawyer in Bulgaria.
I could give you the name of the lawyer my agency used, just pm me. I only have her name, you would have to look up how to contact her.
Also, it you go to Yahoo groups and search for Bulgaria, there are 2 groups there that are great. One is a forum group, the other is more of an information repository. You may be able to find some lawyer contacts there, as well as other families who may be willing to give you info.

Hi,
Yes it is possible to adopt independent from Bulgaria by hiring an accredited attorney. This would leave you responsible for getting together your dossier..although, I am certain the attorney could assist you along the way. We recently used an attorney in Sofia who was great. (she is accredited) We did have a US agency and were very pleased with them also. I , myself was a little nervous to adopt without the assistance of a US agency..However, now that we have the connection and know the ropes, we will go independent if we adopt again. If anyone is interested please pm me. Her fees are around 8500 total. Good luck to you all!

I am a DWF and adopted from Bulgaria with no issues. I had such a great experience that I am going back for another daughter. The only issues I am aware with are the timing ones. Due to law changes, and a Ministry of Justice change (all for the better IMHO) there are questions of possible backlogs. Based on some recent postings, families have been getting referrals 5 months after registration, which is to the timeline. If this holds true, then timing os not a huge concern. E-mail me if you want information on the agency I am using.
