This isn't specifically about the Tax Credit, but I'm hoping someone will know the answer as I've gotten conflicting info.
My husband and I are in the process of adopting our daughter. We have had custody of her since birth and have the legal document signed by b-mom 72 hrs after birth giving us custody (consent to adopt).
When doing taxes for bio-kids, I require a Social Security #. I do not have one for our a-daughter and will not recieve a SS card or birth cert till after finalization...which will not occur until well AFTER April 15th. What then do I need to declare her as a dependent?
I was told by our atty that we need a "tax ID #", but 2 other sources said that is for a business, not a baby. A baby's Tax ID # IS her SS #! OK, so then SS told me that to get a SS #, I need...a berth certificate! AHHH! Which I legally cannot obtain!
The reseptionist at the office of the person who prepares our taxes said I'd just need proof that she is in our custody (72 hr signed document)...but that has not ID numbers on it, so i don't see how that can possibly be accurate.
Finally, the IRS said there is a form called W7A for adoptive parents.
If anyone is familiar with W7A, please let me know what is required to complete this form. I just don't want to get it in the mail and learn that I need a birth cert to complete it or some other piece of ID that I do not and cannot have.
Thanks soooo much!

hi hope this helps, your attorney is right you child needs what is called an ATIN # for an adopted child who does not have a social security number, If you want to claim your daughter as a dependent you need to get this asap, you can call the irs and request them to mail you the form, then it takes about a month or so to process it and assign your child a number. hope this helps! What you need to send the irs is a copy of your placement agreement , no other info!
