I am planning on giving the book "The Spirit of Open Adoption" by James L. Gritter to my daughter's parents after finalization. It's gonig to be part of a big finalization package.
I want to write something to them that explains why I'm giving them the book-but at the same time doesn't offend them. I want them to have the book to use as a guide, a resource, an encouragement. I'm not giving it to them because I think they can do a better job with it. I'm not giving it to them because I think they need it. I'm giving it to them because I think they will appreciate expanding their horizons a bit.
Would you be offended?
Any suggestions on what to say and how to word it?
Hi Faith...
What a wonderful gift you'd be giving your daughters parents!! I'm an adoptive Mama and read every book by James Gritter, Adoption Without Fear was the first. I gave that book to both of our childrens' birth families, and they all appreciated it greatly. As did my parents and my husbands mother. The books Mr. Gritter writes are far from dealing on a unilateral level... there's truly something for everyone and I think all his books are blessings!!
I would be honored to receive the book you've mentioned. And my thought is that if you have a relationship with your daughters parents, that they would graceoulsy accept that book in the spirit in which you give it. Just tell them from your heart why you wanted them to have it. What kind of effect did the book have on you? That sort of thing. Did it have an impact on how you made the choices you did for your daughter... did it help support you? Certainly do give it with a letter, as well as perhaps a small dedication written in the front cover of the book so that anyone to ever open the book can see it was given from your heart to the hearts of those in the family you helped create!!
God bless you Faith!

aw, thank you for that.
I actually haven't finished it yet. I might not in time for finalization but I can already tell that it is going to be something that they'd like to read. I also got spontaneous and ordered "Lifegivers" (also by Gritter) and received it in the mail yesterday. Because of the mood I was in I started reading that book too. I would have very much liked to have known about these books before I started the adoption process...it would have smoothed out some serious bumps.
Thanks for your input.
