Has anyone done this?
DH and I are seriously considering international adoption (from Guatemala). We have just PCSed to Italy and should have approx. three years here before we PCS again.
I have found agencies that have stated they've worked with military families abroad before. My main question is how exactly does it work?
I understand that if both DH and I travel and get a certain type of visa, the child is an american citizen once he/she reaches American soil. Can the child come with us directly to Italy, or do we need to go to the US first and get a passport, then come to Italy? Do I wait and apply for the child's no-fee passport in the states, or do I bring him to Italy on a tourist passport- then deal with enrolling him/her in DEERS, etc.
Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks in advance,
Jess
I am so suprised to find that nobody has addressed your issues.
We, too, are doing an International Adoption while stationed overseas. We are adopting from China while living in Japan.
Who have you chosen as your adoption agency? How about who to do your homestudy? We are going with Children's House International to do the adoption, and Randy Barlow to do our homestudy.
As for the citizenship questions, my agency suggests that we fly to Hawaii from China, and then here. Seems silly, but that way we get her citizenship immediately. She's looking into some of the legal stuff now.
Where are you guys at as far as the adoption process?
Congratulations on your decision to adopt,
Venessia~
