I thought I would share my letter to the editor of our local paper with you. Minnesota has very complete reporting of induced abortions and reading the stats makes me sad. You can find the data at the Minnesota dept of health web site.
To the editor:
In July, the Minnesota Department of Health sent to the legislature the 2003 report regarding induced abortions in Minnesota. Sadly, 5,621 women chose "does not want children at this time" as one of the reasons for having an abortion. Were these women aware of the hundreds of couples waiting at local adoption agencies longing for a chance to parent a child? Why don't more women facing unplanned pregnancies consider adoption?
Expectant moms thinking about adoption first have to overcome pressure to have an abortion, and then face insensitive comments such as "I could never give up my own flesh and blood." Adoption is not about "giving up," rather it is a parenting decision that chooses, out of love, the best possible future for one's child.
With adoption, the pregnancy ends with a celebration of new life by both birthparents and adoptive parents. With abortion, the pregnancy ends with death.
Adoption is always a loving choice!
Nicely written. It is so sad that abortion, such an incredibly selfish act, is still so common....especially with all the information out there. I dont know how you combat the notion that abortion is "easy" and that "you won't have think about it (the baby) anymore if you just do it" Murder is never easy and the easy out these women are looking for won't come from abortion. It really is so sad.
