I worked with a guy and they named their first born Gherig...after Lou Gherig. I suppose it was better than Yankee!Elway is not too bad when you think of some of the other names out there. My husbands family has been up in arms because his brother...a 4+ generation Donald...has chosen not to name his soon to be born son Donald. Worse yet, he REALLY wants to name him Ashton. Not going over very well with the traditional family. Especially when Grandpa said he only found 1 guy on the internet named Ashton and he was "a grungy looking guy". Besides, as a middle name, why not? Oh...but I am from Washington...GO SEAHAWKS!!

I have friends who have named their children Whyatt, Madison, and Morgan...after the Earps in Tombstone. How is that for a set of namesakes? That having been said, I am personally not a fan (sorry, had to do it) of naming kids after public figures. I also agree, though, that as a middle name Elway is FAR less eye-roll-inspiring for when he gets older, and Elway isn't so bad (though it reminds me of Elroy on the Jetsons). You can't convince him to go with John? Good luck! He'll be a beautiful boy no matter what you name him!
not a broncos fan (chargers), but I can understand the desire. guys, esp. those who love sports, think it's cool to wear other guys' names on their chest and name their kids after them. not so worrysome as the desire for the kid to be a football star. while we are convinced that dd will be the first female major league baseball player (and we did decorate her room with a ton of baseball stuff), we are going to let her choose her own way careerwise. it's harder for your kid to feel they can do that if they're named after a big football hero.

I think it's a bit much, honestly, but only because it's after a football player. Just don't let him make it a first name, and make sure you have a decent normal first name for the kid to go buy - I guarantee you, anyone named Elway would have gotten killed with sticks the second they stepped onto the kindergarten playground at my school. What's the first name going to be?
