My adopted 2yo dd was dx 3 mos ago with acid reflux and first prescribed zantac. She had horrible headaches with it, so prevacid was prescribed. She absolutely will not take it. I got it in powdered packets to pour into her drink, but she won't drink it. I don't know if she can taste it or what, but I've tried different liquids to mask the taste/texture and nothing works. I make sure she isn't watching me prepare it, so she doesn't see me adding anything to her drink.
I have always struggled to give her any kind of med. She is very strong-willed and has even aspirated in the past to try not to swallow her med. The only partial success I've ever had is to give her something that can be mixed into a drink. WHAT SHALL I DO!!
Her throat is lobster-red all the time from the acid coming back up. I've elevated her bed, modified her diet to foods that are not acidic and easy on the tummy. I've sneaked aloe-vera juice into her drinks to soothe her burned throat, but it isn't a cure and I can't get her to take the previcid. AAAAH!!! I am really desperate and Dr. says he is out of ideas. Any suggestions from someone out there who has "been there"? TIA!

Our 3 year old daughter was taking 10 medications a day when she first came to us, prevacid was one of them. Her doctor had prescribed the capsules and suggested we open it and sprinkle it on yogurt, apple sauce, etc. Our problem was she didn't eat anything (really if I could get her to eat five cheerios and a spoonful of macaroni I would be ecstatic!). So we just opened the capsule and sprinkled it on her tongue and she swallowed it, it made it kind of fun for her. Thankfully she is eating now and only needs three medications a day (I think some of the medicine suppresed her appetite).
I'm not sure if this will work for your daugther (maybe not since she knows she doesn't want medicine) but I at least wanted to offer a suggestion that worked for us.
Good Luck - Suz
