I wanted to know if anyone has breastfed an adopted baby from Guatemala. I have two bio kids that I breast fed until they were past 2years. Would love to breast feed my new daughter (just received referral)...but wondering how problematic it could be considering she will most likely be over 6 months at the time we get her. She is now 6 weeks old. I don't want to go on hormones....
You might check out the Guatemala Adoption Forum and ask over there.
I think that at least one parent has or was considering it...I think the user name is CSW...but I could be wrong...hopefully she will find your post here.
At any rate, check out the Guatemala Forum!

I nursed our 2 guat babies (after 3 birth children). I started pumping before the first one was born .... then went when he was 10 days old and nursed him for 2 weeks. Our baby girl was born a month later.... and I nursed her for 2 weeks also.
I think it totally depends on the child... to me it was really important to try... more for bonding than nutrition. I know of people who have nursed children over 2 yrs when they got them.
Your baby will let you know if they are interested at all. You could try to use the supplemental nursing system and that way it gives the baby an incentive to suck because they are at least getting formula even though they are suckling at the breast.
I didn't do hormones either. My OBGYN put me on a med called Domperidone. It is the old version of Reglan, and has relatively no side effects except to help induce milk production.
But I must say that when I had to stop the pumping (we got caught in all that Hague mess) My hormones went on a real roller coaster ride...
Best of Luck
But ~ I'm breastfeeding my baby adopted from Guatemala. We got home in August, but I lived in Antigua since May to foster her until we could bring her home. She's 7 months old on Dec.1 and still a boobie-monster!:) I've never been pregnant - so you will have a different experience I am sure... but I spent two weeks with her (topless) learning to use the lact-aid. Now I can breastfeed all day and only use the lact-aid when she gets frustrated because the breast isnt giving her as much, or as fast, as she would like....
she's a bit spoiled being our first!

I am nursing my 10 month old... we got him at 8 months. I still have to supplement with Lact-aid, but it has helped us bond.. He is getting more nosey now so it is getting harder but he will nurse more for comfort now..
