I might be adopting my cousins child, due June 8th. We live in North Carolina and my cousin lives in California. Seeing as how travel expeses and court fees nad lawyer fees arent going to be enough, I just did a littl eresearch and saw that a homestudy is 1500 dollars!!! I KNOW that the military MIGHT reimburse for these expenses, but...how does a military family come up with that amount of cash in two months?? 1,500 dollars? My gosh. in a family to family adoption, does one NEED a homestudy? I ....feel like ive just been punched in the stomach. We are this little boys only chance at NOT living in foster care. It..is..I feel so discouraged right now. I cant even wrap my mind around this right now.

WOW! Thats what you call meant to be. My hubby is in the Navy, but is stationed with the Marines this time around and I would recommend that you go and talk to legal to see if there is anything that they can do, make recommendations, etc. They might be able to fill out the legal forms, but you will need to file and pay the fees. There is an adoption reimbursement program that will reimburse up to $2000 per child, $5000 per year for adoption costs. However, that doesn't cover travel expenses, that just for legal fees and prehaps homestudy fees. Contact your local Department of Human Services to see if they can do the homestudy, but you will need to check Cali law to make sure they would accept that homestudy, they might require one from their state, then you pay their travel fees and all of that. But definately go talk to legal and see what they can do, plus they can look up the adoption laws for the states. Legal has been a great resource for us, as well as the family service center. Good luck and let me know if i can do anything else for you!Lori
Some states do not require a homestudy for family placements (I do not know if that would extend to your cousins child). Also, I believe you can do a temporary family gaurdianship without a homestudy in almost every state. Check the law of your state and California (if that is where the child was born) on both these issues. By the way, this is exactly what God made credit cards for! Good luck.

I used to volunteer for Navy/Marine Relief and they will not give you a loan for adoption fees. This fund is used only in Emergencies and repaid through allotment.
Funding $1500 for a homestudy would not be an emergency situation. Unexpected car repairs, travel due to death of family member, utilities etc..
Also know that:
Independent adoptions or adoptions done through a for-profit adoption agency do not qualify for military reimbursements
