I got this email this morning and thought it would be a good idea to post it here (as well as the Guatemala forum):
Subject: Guatemala adoption film screening at the Museum of Fine Arts/Boston
Dear Guatemala Family Network Family:
This is to announce the premiere screening of a new documentary exploring
the controversy around adoptions from Guatemala, "Goodbye Baby", at the
Boston Museum of Fine Arts at 6 PM on Thursday, November 3 and 1 PM on
Saturday, November 5. Filmmaker Patricia Goudvis will be present at both
showings.
The number of adoptions from Guatemala to the US has risen dramatically in
recent years -- as has the controversy. What is seen as an act of love by
adoptive parents is viewed with deep suspicion inside Guatemala. By
examining the ramifications of money, private lawyers, media coverage and
women's rights on the adoption process, "Goodbye Baby" illuminates the
complexity of international adoption from the vantage point of those in a
country sending the children.
Informed by the filmmaker's own experiences - she's the mother of two
children adopted from Guatemala, where she's lived on and off during the
past 25 years - "Goodbye Baby" provides a rare glimpse into the sometimes
difficult and dramatic world of intercountry adoption.
"Goodbye Baby" includes voices of birth and foster mothers, adoption agency
workers, adoptive parents, lawyers, government officials and critics of
adoption. Interviews are complemented by intimate footage of the adoption
process, including birth mothers relinquishing babies, the DNA testing and a
visit with a foster mother; children in orphanages; a protest against
adoption; and scenes with adoptive parents in Guatemala picking up their
children.
Tickets are $8 for Museum members, seniors and students; $9 for general
admission. Please call the Museum Box Office at 617 369 3306 for ticket
orders. The Museum is located at 465 Huntington Avenue in Boston, near the
Green Line.
Please help assure that a large crowd shows up and forward this to all you
know who might be interested. Many thanks and hope to see you there!
