Do we need an attorney in MD for open adoption?

Does anyone know if I actually need to hire lawyers for myself and the birth mom? She has a 5 month old, that she wants my husband and I to adopt, so this is a very simple, straightforward adoption case (I hope). Do I need an attorney for both of us? Or can someone explain the steps that I need to take to first establish legal guardianship, while we petition the court for the adoption... IS this stuff easy to do by yourself, or do you really need an attorney to draw up all the paperwork etc.,? We are planning on having an open adoption, and have all the points already hammered out between us. We adopted our first child through the state foster/adopt programme, so all this was done for us.... Thanks for your help! A_Bin MD
