I know that I am getting ahead of myself even thinking about buying clothes for our baby girl, but I can't help myself. Since we were DTC Friday and my agency is seeing referrals come in after 8 months it is my guess that we should get ours around Oct. We requested an infant ages 6-12 months. I know most Chinese babies are on the small side so what size clothing should I buy when I can't resist  For those of you that have your children home what size did you mostly purchase? Or those with a shopping problem such as myself, what size are you buying?

Hi ladies,
My dh was told by my mother not to let me buy anything for the baby because they are going to throw me a baby shower, So of coarse dh has to listen to the mother and not let me get anything. Well I finally got him to let me buy a few outfits (size 12months). Our LID is May 20, 2006, We ended up finding our beautiful daughter on the November WC List, she is 22 months old and weighs a whopping 28 lbs. from what the papers said. We got the call yesterday for our TA and will be leaving at the end of February beging of March for China. We now have nothing for her except her bedroom furinture and crib sheets. The outfits I bought for her now is to small to fit her so they will be going to China to the orphanage. So what I must say to all you so you don't make the same mistake we did, shop until you drop and have a ball doing it. LOL Sorry story so long but I had to share it with you all.

I'm going to a 1st birthday party for a little girl today and I bought her a very cute outfit for her birthday. I had a very hard time restraining myself from buying the same outfit for our daughter. My DH talked me out of it. I haven't bought any clothes at all. Mainly because we have all four seasons in OH. We were LID in Oct. but with the delay who knows when we will get a referral. I'm afraid to buy any clothes until I know her size. Then I'm going to go crazy! I LOVE SHOPPING! Melissa
I have bought a few outfits in 12 and 18 months. I must admit so far I had not thought of what Joanne had to say (good points) and I bought cute outfits that I dream of a girl wearing. I do have one very big plus, we live in Phx so she can wear summer outfits at least 8 months out of the year!! Hopefully she will get some use out of them.I also only buy on sale. Now I am getting a little more pratical and I have been buying PJ's in sizes 18 mo and up, fuguring she can always use them. I have also started buying more things like sippy cups, bottles, feeding dishes etc.
another thing or two or three with the snap crotch onesies and 'shirts'.... :)
Some of the babies are not going to use diapers for long or may not poop in a diaper due to the training they've had at their orphanage or with their foster family.
One of our travel mates daughters from our 2nd trip (our girls were 10 months at time of adoption) only poops in the potty and that was from when we were in China. I imagine the whole having to undo the snap crotches would get old quickly!! And we have friends who's babies really really wanted to pee and poop in the potty at very very young ages (like from 1 year of age).
With our Mira, since she's so thin, by the time she could wear size 24 mth shirts most of the ones we had pre bought had the snap crotches. Well by the time she could wear them she was 2 1/2 years old and we were starting potty training so we never used those shirts.
We have friends who went thru the same situation with their first daughter!

Shopping for little girl clothes are so fun. It is hard not to restrain yourself, especially during the waiting. Since you are requesting between 6-12 months I would buy the larger sizes at least just in case. Also keep in mind that there are big differences in sizes between manufacturers. (Did you know that there are actually 3 different sizes for the same weight and height for Osh Kosh depending on whether you are buying a toddler line, baby line or girl line - how confusing!)
Prior to adopting my daughter I had read about how much the kids grow after they come home so I didn't buy much for her current size when we got her. She was 14 months, 19 pounds and 29 inches. She gained 4 pounds in a month but didn't grow heightwise quickly like I thought. So all the 18 month clothes I bot her she didn't wear til this fall and some of them were winter and they are now too small. Even though she is average weight now many lines are too large even if I go by their sizing chart.
So I guess my advice to you is don't go too crazy - try to buy the larger sizes of non-seasonal practical things (I have a closet full of dresses from her shower never worn because that's all people bot but they aren't practical for my child!)
But at the same time you have to have a splurge or two here or there! Have fun!
Well I was going to brag about not buying yet:rolleyes: , BUT I have been crocheting dresses, skirts, booties, etc. It takes longer that way, but the end result is the same, clothes in the closet. :) We will probably buy pj and a few things here to take, but we want to get some clothes in china, both to wear and to keep for her latter.

I haven't bought any clothes for my daughter because I know people are going to throw me a baby shower. My MOTHER on the other hand keeps bringing home a variety of outfits. Some of them are only 3-6 months and I was wondering if I brought them to China and they were too small can I donate them to the orphanage?
I've been buying clothes for months - can't help it.*S* Most of what I've bought ranges from 12 months to 24 months. Being in New England, weather changes alot so much of what I bought can be layered and adapted like a denim jumper - anklets and a t shirt it's great for spring, some summer days or early fall, tights, a long sleeve shirt and sweater you're covered for late fall and winter. Everything I have bought has been on clearance. If something ends up being outgrown before she wears it, girls seem to be running on DH's side of the family so the clothes won't go to waste. I try to limit myself but every now and then I give in; it helps me deal with the wait.

I have to confess! I broke down yesterday and bought a pair of black patent leather shoes. They were on sale for $3. Who can pass that up? I got a size 5 b/c the friend I was with said that would be around 1 1/2 years. The best part was when I brought them home. DH was so excited! He said seeing those shoes made it seem real again because it seems like we've been waiting forever. I got a cute note from him this morning about them, too! They were definitely worth the $3! Melissa
Even though I adopted from Russia...I have been following this thread and laughing...I had a closet full of mostly 12 month clothes (I am talking over 100 outfits!):p when we brought our daughter home at 11 months...she was wearing a 3/6 months size...so I had to go out and buy more...
Thankfully, my little peanut stayed small and wore 12 month clothes for a long, long time...

Enjoy ladies...shopping is great therapy while you are waiting!
We are waiting to buy clothes until we know her approximate size at referral - but we have been buying a lot of books, videos, flash cards, CD's - the Baby Einstein are great! (if you look you can find them really, really cheap!)
(also have been stocking up on diapers - have used lots of coupons)
I agree that the shopping will be great therapy during the wait - we have a chart of when we are going to start buying the furiture for her room and such...

Hi,
I bought a variety of size clothes while waiting. Most at consignment shops, garage sales and end of season sales--all at great prices. It was practical--and very therapeutic for me during the wait. Ultimately, there were a handfull of outfits that were too small for my daughter. She was 14 months when she came home and was mostly in 6-9 or 9-12 mos clothes (and wore those sizes for a long time) The clothes that were too small ---we donated to the orphanage.
What we found worked for us was more seperates than onesies. I think what we used the most in the beginning were cotton pants and t-shirts. I found that if the pants were too big--it was easy to roll them up and if the shirts were too big-it was easy to tuck them in. Other moms in our group swore buy sun dresses saying that size isn't such a big deal in sundresses.
Take care,

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of little girl clothes size 9 months, so when I see sales for 12 and 18 month, I pick them up, of course her closet is clear full: -)
I think shopping is just too much fun to pass up, especially with great sales. I figure anything that doesn't fit our daughter I can save for a possible dd #2 (you never know) or I can donate them. I sponsor a little girl in Colombia and the organization is always happy to accept clothing donations.
