How did you learn nursery rhymes? Fairy Tales?
I don't really know any.. I don't even remember the words to "Where is Thumbkin?!"
I'm going to have to buy some nursery rhyme books I think. I can't believe I don't remember any of them!
Oooh, I do remember the Itsy Bitsy Spider!
Hickory dickory dock
the mouse ran up the clock
the clock struck one
the mouse ran down
Hickory dickory dock
Don't forget tho, with ANY nursery rhymes, there are slight differences depending on who is saying it. One or two words may be different.

Bakers man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
now, this is where it differs...some say
Rollllllllllllllllll it and paaaaaaaaaaaaaaat it,
and mark it with a b
and putit in the oven for baby and me.
MY grandmother said
Pit it and pat it and mark it with a b
and put it in the oven for baby and me.
how funny you should ask this!
even after years of babysitting for every family i knew,
assisting in a preschool class for a few years,
and
teaching elementary school,
all of the sudden...
...i REALIZED i Forgot EVERY nursery rhyme, bible school song, little motion song, etc.
So, i had to go and buy a couple of books!
i now have a book of little 'kid' poems (some with motions),
and
some of those old classic stories and nursery rhymes.
i also bought some cds for the songs missing in my mind!
LOL!:)
IM SO glad i wasnt the only one with 'nusery rhyme amnesia!"
cris...who now a few kids into things STILL has to go to the books every few months
as my memory cant seem to retain such silliness!;)
from guatemala forums!
nursery rhyme amnesia....LOL! Is that what it is? I always thought it was because my brain learned more of the off color limericks and didn't have room for the other stuff anymore...:)
Julie...if your MIL teaches your kids this stuff...make sure they know not to say it in school! LOL!:)

Crick, good point! I'd choke if she said it in front of any kids, and luckily, she's pretty respectful most of the time of keeping children conversations for children. She comes up with the doozies at night, after a couple margaritas usually. LOL!
cr653, YES! Me, too! I babysat everyone I know. And can't remember a darned thing! I'm glad it's not just me, too!!!!
I will admit to Googling the words to various nursery rhymes and kids' songs when my rapidly aging brain can't recall them. :p That also comes in handy when DH and I can't agree on the wording. For example, we have different names for the fingers in Thumbkin. (Which, according to our DD, is actually "Funkin" anyhow.) Same thing for what was known at our house as the Great Spider Debate: is it Itsy-Bitsy or Eensy-Weensy?  :D
(The jury's still out on that one..............)
We say Itsy-bitsy, but took a Music Together class with DS and they said Eensy-weensy. Very strange! Lol.
DS LOVES LOVES LOVES nursery rhymes and songs....B-I-N-G-O, Old MacDonald's Farm, London Bridge, Twinkle Twinkle..and so on.
We also have a "name" for each finger for Thumpkin....there is thumpkin, pointer, tallman (middle finger), ring man and pinky. Lol. I am a dork!

Anyone know the words to Hickery Dickery Dock... a very heated debate going on in our household on this one!! :D
Hubby and I had this debate too, he says it's:
Hickory Dickory Dock
the mouse ran up the clock
the clock struck one
and down he did run
Hickory Dickory Dock.
He says you haaaave to say, "and down he did run" is it rhyms with ONE.
BTW Julie, I didn't know squat either and felt so silly, all the other adults around me knew them... parents and NON parents alike. But I know them now  and how.

nope, the jury came back and said it's definitely Itsy Bitsy and those who use eensy weensy will face 10 years hard time.
I actually asked the class teacher which lyrics she used-I refused to pay for a class that used the "other" lyrics.
we joke that dd will stand up in class and scream "NO!!! It's Itsy Bitsy!!! Mommy Says!!!"
what disturbed me when we brought dd home is that dh, who holds a ton of useless trivia in his head, couldn't remember any of the lyrics to any kid's song, lullaby, or whatever  . I had to buy a few kids cds for him to memorize-so sad and so embarrassing...
2. The clock struck two, the mouse said: moooo...
3. The clock struck three, the mouse said: weee...
4. The clock struck four, the mouse said: no more!

Our twist to the Itsy Bitsy Spider.
I used to work with a little boy who was blind, so we changed the hand movements so that you were touching him the whole time, like your fingers walking up his ribs for the first line, drumming your fingers on the top of his head for rain, wiping your hand across his face for the sun.
We do this with Liam, because the tickle factor is sooo much more fun! But for Liam, at the end we've added:
"And the Itsy Bitsy Spider climbed up the spout again.......and lived in your armpit!!!!"
With lots of tickling of course!!!
