Yesterday I filled Drihan's sandbox up and put her in it for the first time. She had a blast, but threw sand in her hair :woohoo: She isn't due to have her hair washed for a few more days so do I just leave it and comb through it as usual or do I wash it? The thing is, chances she is going to get more in it and i don't want to keep washing her hair everyday and dry it out. On a good note it is orange sand made by Kaleidescope(sp?) company so it looks pretty in there ;)
I "wash" Addy's hair with conditioner when it's not due to be washed. Do everything the same as if you were washing it, just use conditioner and comb it through. I do it when she has gotten dirt or food in her hair but it's not due to be washed yet. Good Luck!!

this is why many black families avoid the sand pile, lol, or let the kid play the day before shampoo day.
lisa, that is funny, with another foster daughter, i let her play in the sand on hair nights!! that way she got to play but i knew her hair was getting washed that night!
see, there you go :) . much easier to deal with, lol.
I'm never really concerned about dd, because she's not into throwing sand, but the other kids  .
it is not so much the throwing but when they are little and digging, sometimes the shovels get away from them and sand just flys!!

The boar bristle brush is great on our girls' hair. It isn't as rough as other brushes and is what hairstylists reccomend for AA hair.

THANKS!!! I would braid it if she would sit still and not scream like I was cutting off her foot *LOL* I had it in poms yesterday.
I used to dread the sandbox when Maire-Kate was a baby. She always ended up with sand in her hair. I'd brush out as much as I could.
Even now, she'll roll around on the ground and get up with a head full of mulch!
As for braiding a baby's hair, my little one is almost a year old. At first, I would hold her on my lap and try to part her hair and she would start looking up and grabbing the comb (or anything else), her parts would be so crooked!! Now, she reaches up and tries to pull the comb out of my hand while whining. She doesn't like it at all! Her hair is still too short to braid, but I do little twisties that look sort of like braids. It's a struggle, though. Hanna prefers the Nipsy Russell look!
Great post. I've been washing our DD's hair w/ conditioner for the past 4 months(once a week), but had no idea that I could do it any more frequently. Now that we will be swimming, I guess that I can wash as often as needed w/ conditioner.
Any other mothers using conditioner on your kids hair rather than washing? Anyone try Pantene ProV for Women of Color? I used it last week for our 1st shampoo in 4 months and really liked it on her hair.
Best Wishes.
I filled the tub with water and had Bella lie down on her back with me supporting her head. We swished her hair around so that the sand would fall out. Then, we conditioned and rinsed with the shower sprayer. Worked like a charm for us!
On another post I read, they used the hose of a vacumn. I tried that and it worked better then anything else I have tried. My kids think it's fun as well!

I have two Black kiddos (and another due the end of September!). My son is almost four and my daughter is 2.5, and they both LOVE the sandbox. I agree with the hat thing. Making the hat a condition of sandbox play is always a good idea. That said, I do what I can to get as much sand out by rinsing their hair and scalps with water from the hose (luckily they love the water, too) before heading inside. I've found that what I can't get out will work its way out eventually. I'm usually more concerned with sand in their other "areas" since during the summer they're usually au naturale in the back yard. On days with sand play (which is almost every day) they get a bath and instead of shampooing I saturate with conditioner, comb through and rinse. Works better than shampooing, I think
I use either the Infusium leave-in conditioner (but it's very watery) or the Nexus conditioner. I also use Carol's Daughter products on them both.

Tracey,
Have you tried doing it when she's asleep. I keep my son's hair very short now, but I didn't cut it until he was about 15 months old. Before then I'd plait in once in a while, not corn rows but single plaits. It looked really cute.
Anyway, the only way I'd have any luck was waiting until he fell asleep. He used to take a nebulizer treatments a few times a day and usually fell asleep in my lap during the bedtime treatment. Then he'd let me lie him on one side, comb out his hair (gently of course) on that side and plait it if that's what I felt like. Then I'd flip him over and do the other side -- he never stirred. Of course he was a pretty heavy sleeper. The first time he woke up with braided hair he was a little suprised! LOL!
Anyway, I don't know how deeply Drihan sleeps but I thought I'd suggest it.
