I was reading about the $10,000. Adoption tax breaks but noticed it had a line that stated for US Orphans. Are there any Tax breaks for International adoptions?
You do qualify for the tax break if you adopt internationally. Also, a few states also give you a break on your state taxes. Many employers will also give you something towards adoption. My employers gave me $6,000 and my husband got $4000 plus 22 days adoption leave!!!!

How great is that! My employer isn't giving me anything. My husband's employer let him carry over his vacation time which normally he can not do. Somewhere, I saw a list of companies that had great adoption benefits. I remember that Blue Cross Blue Shield was one of them because that is where my mother worked.
You may claim the federal adoption tax credit in the year your foreign adoption is final.
To be eligible for the full credit, you must have spent at least $10K on the adoption, BUT you can count towards that amount even money spent prior to the year you claim the credit. All reasonable expenses count, including travel costs, homestudy costs, apostilles, etc.
There are some people who will be able to take only part of the credit because they earn too much, and a few high earners will not be able to take the credit at all. However, the average person CAN claim the credit.
The credit is just that. It is not a rebate or a deduction. But if you don't owe enough tax in the year you claim the credit, you can use the remaining credit for up to five years.
