My husband and I attend our last MAPP class this Saturday. We've already had our first home study visit and have been notified to call and make appointments for the Fire and Health inspections. We are ready for all of this except for the installation of a few locks and alarms my husband is intending to do this weekend. The only thing that we are having trouble with is the water safety course we are required to take because we have a pool.
I started searching on the internet four weeks ago after our first MAPP class when I first found out we were required to take water safety and came up empty handed. Finally last week one of the instructors passed along an email with some contacts on it. I called them all first thing Monday morning and it seems that we just missed the water safety classes and they are not sure if they are going to give any more this year!?!
I can't believe that I am going to have to wait an entire year when we will be finished with everything else within the next two weeks. I am so disappointed right now and just needed to vent.
Seems unfair that they would wait so many months to head another water safety class. If I were u I would contact the company and explain your situation, maybe there is something they can do for you. If that doesn't work, coudln't u talk to the agency and tell them the problem u r having, maybe they'll be understanding of your situation and license you w/ the agreement you'll take the class the minute it becomes available.
Good luck!

My husband and I were licensed in Oct 2005. We also had trouble finding water safety classes. We finally called the local college campus and found a lifeguard there who was certified to give Red Cross water safety classes - it was only 4 hours and as long as she had 4 people from our Mapp class she said she would do it on a Saturday morning for us. If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest trying the local colleges as well as the YMCA and YWCA.
We have a pool and the class has not been offered here at all. It did not keep us from getting our license and we have recertified twice. When it is offered we will take it but it is hard to do if the county does not offer it!
Good luck and it may not hold up your licence if everything else is in place.
Something that is not available should definately not be critical for your licensing. If it were UFF would make demands enough to get rid of all of us~~. Couldn't help but decided tooffer my opinion anyway.
Hi, where in FL do you live? We had the same problem but were able to get someone out to the house and offer the training for a nominal fee. I think it was 30 bucks per person (thereabouts). If you can arrange to have other people from your mapp class attend I believe you'll get a discount. We're in the St. Pete area.
Also keep in mind, (depending on where you live and what foster agency you're using) you'll probably have more time than you think before a child is placed in your home. We were finished with MAPP in April, and it wasn't until July when we had 2 kids placed with us.
You can also try clubswim.com.. they offer training in your area. I didn't have any luck with them, however you might.
Hope that helps
