Hi-
In Washington, you basically have 2 options for searching:
1. Search on your own.
2. Hire a Confidential Intermediary (CI).
Both have pros and cons but if you decide to search on your own, there's a LOT of info out there to help you on your way!
One thing you should do is to request your "non-identifying information" (non-id). You can get this info from the following places:
-County where the adoption was finalized (typically same county where adoptive parents lived).
-Adoption agency, if one was involved.
-DSHS, if they were involved.
Request the non-id from all applicable places.
Also, there's a great Yahoo group that can help with searching in Washington and other Northwest states. All you need is a free Yahoo email account! Here's the URL: washingtonstateadoptionsearch : Washington State Adoption Search. Definitely check 'em out!
Good luck!
