OK now, before you all jump down my throat I started this thread to share some intersting information I learned as a result of this very request from an Emom with whom DW and I almost matched. In essence, Emom wanted to be Godmother to enhance her connection to her baby boy and strengthen her spiritual connection as well. She claimed it would also help with her family's acceptance of her decision to place her baby and with us as a-parents. Fast forward to a conversation with a long time priest friend who also married us. He spoke with Canon lawyers in the Archdiocese and who confirmed what has been posted in other similar threads which is a Godparent may not be the parent of the individual being baptized. Fine....got it. So the question arose since Emom will relinquish her parental rights does she still retain her standing under the Canons as a parent for the purpose of Baptism. The answer, from the Canon lawyers - the Canons do not distinguish between B-parents and A-parents and, furthermore, no dispensation to the Canon can be granted permitting the B-parent to be nominated as Godparent. Our friend, who enjoys alliteration, said any priest who permits this would find himself in the midst of a Canonical Conundrum. Just passing on this information and wondering if anyone else has ever run into this situation....Thanks! :flowergift:

hmmm... very interesting. I think that there are a number of priests who would not have a problem with this as the first parent is technically no longer the parent. I know our priest would go for it, but he's a progressive kind of guy.
I love the idea actually! What a wonderful connection for all parties involved. Its like a blessing of the adoptive union in a way.
