Hi!
We are just starting our research into adoption. I am a Canadian citizen, and my husband is a US citizen. We currently reside in Manitoba. We would like to pursue "domestic" infant adoption, but from what I've been reading, the wait in Canada/Manitoba is SUPER long (3+ years). So, we started talking about adopting a newborn from the US. Does anyone know if my husband's citizenship would help us in this regard?
Has anyone else on this board (or other boards that you could lead me to) adopting from the States? I would love to hear your experiences and which agencies you used (you could PM me). I'm still quite confused as to the immigration side of things (because my husband is American, would the baby have to have Canadian papers in order to bring her/him home?). I'm unsure if we would need to work with a US agency, Canadian agency, or one of each.
Thanks for any insight or advice!

I am an American, married to a Canadian and living in Alberta. We researched adopting from the US and my citizenship made absolutely no difference. It all depends at where you reside (in order to adopt internationally your spouse would have to at least be landed) not where you are a citizen, at least that is what we were told.
We decided not to pursue a US adoption. Our reality was that at least what we were told, it would be more expensive for us to adopt from there than any other international adoption programs available in Canada. Not only that, but the process seemed much more complicated (mostly because each state has a different set of laws) than any other international program as well. In the end, we chose to do a domestic placement here in Alberta and have been blessed with two children since starting the process in August 2002.
As for the citizenship stuff, go here.
I do know of people who have done it but I don't know their stories personally. You may have already done this but you might look at Manitoba Family Services for more information. My experience is all in Alberta and I know each province can have different rules. Here is some more information that might be useful...
Hope that helps! And best of luck. Keep us updated on what you decide okay???

First of all, WELCOME to the forum!!!!
now for your question...
Sorry, i adopted domestically...but
I dont think there would be any easier route because of your hubby's citizenship...If you are living here, you will still need work on both sides of the border.
are you SURE about that estimated wait? we were given alot of false information when we first set out. Most people told us the whole 3-5 year thing...but once we talked to actual agencies, that just wasn't the case.
Make sure you have accurate info before you make this big decision.
Good luck! I can't wait to see how your journey unfolds!! It's really exciting, isn't it?
