Hi! The application does not take a year. That is usually a very short form to fill out. Frequently there will be an application fee. Research carefully, you don't want to put out a load of money upfront! The "waiting" part depends on the type of adoption you are looking at. Domestic adoption you wait for a birthmom to pick you. International adoption involves more paperwork and you have to wait for everything to be processed by 2 governments. I went to several seminars hosted by local agencies, which are free. Helped me figure some of this stuff out! And the info on these boards sure helped too! Good luck to you!

Like Tink said, application certainly doesn't take a year. Our entire home study took a month. We went with a smaller agency. While they might not have had the connections the big agencies have, their price was far morereasonable, they were more accessible and we didn't have to pay for made-up expenses like application fees. We paid for the homestudy, birthparent counseling, mileage for social workers, court fees, etc. I agree with doing your research and definitely, absolutely ask for at least three reference couples from any agency you go with. I independently chose reference couples I knew had gone with our agency. It makes a big difference.Good luck!
