He's lightning fast, ya know? He woke from his afternoon nap just as we were being pummeled by a storm that ended up getting Josh called out to the fire department because of tornado stuff. So, Nick followed me into the kitchen, sad because his Daddy just left. I was getting him a cup of milk. He heard a noise at the front door. And went running.
I didn't notice Josh didn't latch our gate when he left.
Down went Nicholas. The whole flight of (thankfully carpeted) stairs.
Somehow he didn't have a scratch or a bump or a bruise but he was pretty shook up. As was I, no doubt. And, since he was on a call, Josh couldn't answer the phone. So, Mommy cried. Nick cried. It was a great time. He was pretty upset so he got to watch Blue's Clues and eat applesauce and have milk and sit on my lap for a good hour.
The things we say will never happen in OUR home... sigh.
Welcome to the world of motherhood... horrible mother that I am, both my children managed to go down a flight of steps as toddlers. (Not at the same time!) Unbelievably, neither was hurt... and I was probably the most shook up! (Hmm, maybe that's what's realy wrong with my 31yr old!!!) Hang in there!

We lived in a one room cabin (with a loft) when our oldest was very young. She fell down the split-log stairs and banged up her lip. :( I felt SO awful...and then her tooth died! BAD mommy moment when I realized that she'd have to have her tooth removed.
But she's fine and at age 14 has a full set of teeth (knock on wood) that are straight and white, so all turned out ok. :)

Bug was nine months, not even walking yet when she did that (whole flight of stairs, carpeted), thanks to her Momma's level of distraction. I'll never forget it. LIke Nicholas, not a scratch but she and I cried and rocked for what felt like hours before we both calmed down.
Roo OTOH was not so lucky. Two steps out of the camper and stitches. Well they glued it but good grief... we felt horrible about it. He is so fast and fearless that I can hardly keep up.
Hugs to you and Nicholas. It is so hard when it happens to you.
Oh poor Baby and Mommy. i'm glad to hear you both made it through with only a bit of a cry.
We don't have the stais issue. But we do have a STEP in our house leading to our garage (but it's convereted into a room). Everything is carpeted around it except the step itself is made of tile. I knew from the moment I saw it SOMEONE was going to get hurt on it..and...they did.
By 6 year old son was playing in the room, slipped and of all things fell down adn hit the back of his head on the step...he ended up having to go to the ER and get stiches as well. I felt so bad for him....and so mad at myself that I hadn't done somehtign about that stupid step ...when I JUST KNEW...it looked like a great place to get hurt on.
Jenna,
Boy what a way to start your week off! I'm glad to hear that you are both doing ok. What a scary and nautious feeling. I'm fortunate not to have stairs but I have lots of corner bumpers because of too many falls into them.

Ok that is just my worst fear ever!!!!!! OMG.....how freakin' scary! My mom has a flight of stairs to the loft in her house and I swear I have a heart attack everytime Aria and I walk up those stairs. I grip the baby gate so hard in my hands lugging it up the stairs and I am quick to have that bad boy set up in seconds.....whew so scary!
But at Aria's God mom's she has a STEP just one step, it's a big step, but just one. Well after months of Ari cruising up and down the step with no problem, I was like....hey no worries....she's got the step down! So last week, I turn my head and kiddo does a front FLIP off of the step, hits her noggin and ends up on her back. Mad crazy goose egg on her forehead.
The child did a full body flip off of ONE step....man now I have to worry about the step again....sheesh if kids won't kill ya!
Scary scary....a moment of total mommie solidarity for you...I would have freaked.
I feel for you---that absolutely terrifies me. We have 6 staircases in our house and garden, and only 2 of them can be gated off. When H was tiny, I started telling him to WAIT, WAIT, WAIT and to sit down on your bottom on the stairs. Now he thinks that you must spend some time sitting on the stair, then you are free to go on up.
And they're SO FAST!!! The other day I turned around and he'd made it all the way up the stairs to the second floor....after a brief spell of sitting on his bottom, of course.
I'm thinking of a new children's clothing line---made from bubble wrap. With matching helmets.
Glad you guys are OK.
I just thank God that we are in a split level! Yes, we have had it happen...but on the bright side...it could have been twice as many stairs!
