The line---clarification

In closing the controversial thread, Brandy mentioned that the thread was "crossing the line" and "straddling the line."

In reading that, I realized I'm not quite sure where the line is. Could one of the mods please clarify? I'm not arguing or debating, just asking for clarification so that we're all on the same page.
