OK I need a cute hairdo fix... anyone have pics for me? Also I need ideas for Athena for when she gets older. Cornrows, beads, and twists would be appreciated.
(Just got off a thread in the guatemala room showing websites with all kinds of cute bows so I'll be getting her some of those as well!)

My suggestion is that you do quick hairstyles when they are young. But it is important to do hair. My daughter came home at 21 months with a buzz cut. I had about 6 months of just head bands. And then I started getting brave. At first she would only sit for a maximum of 10 minutes to have her hair done. That was with TV on and a toy in her hands. Each time I did hair I tried to have her sit for 1 minute longer. They will not learn to sit for hair unless you work with them. But I do not know how they will do younger then 2 years old. Now she will easily sit through an entire movie while I do hair. But it could easily take 30-40 minutes just to comb it out. I sometimes to part of a hairstyle on Friday, then more on Saturday, and finish it up on Sunday. That is the plan this weekend. I am taking out the chunky (easy to put in) twists and putting in the micro box braids (about 80-90 on her head). That must be done in stages because it easily takes 5-6 hours. What isn't in braids will be in a puff until I get to it.Slow and steady and only what they can tolerate. Make hair as pleasant as possible.Samantha
Thank you Oceanica and Samantha! So far she really tolerates the cute barrettes and bows, but they have to be completely covered in ribbon, no metal exposed or she pulls them out! And I don't want her tearing her beautiful hair out. I am going to look today for some product for her hair that a friend suggested and some tiny hair ties to see what she will let me do and see how long she'll keep them in this weekend. :)
I really hope I added my pictures correctly...been a long time since I've posted pictures on this forum. The 1st should be box braids and the 2nd is several big twists. A factor in styling time varies greatly depending on hair type. My dd's (7) hair is very dense and the braids take almost 8 hours, but are done over several 2 hour sittings. I have someone that comes to my house for those and they last for quite awhile. Stretched, her hair is just past the middle of her back. It has been years since we could do puffs - I just love them on little ones though - they are so cute! I have been going back and forth (in my mind) for about a year considering relaxing it. I haven't yet, still considering and researching. When I was growing up, pretty much all aa friends had their hair relaxed from around age 10 or so.

BeckyS,Love those box braids. I was planning that for my daughter this weekend (her hair is not that long yet but goes down past her shoulders when stretched out). But here it is Sunday and she is still in a puff. Since I know it takes 6-7 hours to do hers I don't see it happening. But I will hopefully try to start tonight and do a little each night. Love that the box braids last so long.
Ocracoke, that's why we love braids too. They take forever to put in and take out, but with them lasting so long, it's worth it. We do a lot of variations of the big twists...it's our standby style. Much quicker to do, but must be redone often. I just love the pictures of the little ones. I will have to try to dig out a few when dd was younger.

I love twists! They are easy to put in. East to take out. But they don't last as long as braids. And they leave beautiful ringlets in my daughter's hair when first taken out -- and that lasts for about 1 hour until my rough and tumble girl begins to look a little like a wild woman.I started doing the mini box braids on my daughter's hair on Sunday. She fell asleep before I was done with the first braid. She looked like a bobble head while I tried to finish the first row before putting her to bed. So she has a large puff and 4 tiny tiny box braids right now. Hoping to do more braids tonight -- been in court all week so far so have not had the energy to do braiding at night.SamanthaSamantha
I have another question:
I put her hair into connecting ponytails as shown earlier and when the girl at my office does it she really makes them tight. This time I left them in for 3 days. Will that be harmful to the hair, and will it bother her?
I know if that was in my hair for more than a few minutes I would be removing it - seems like it would be worse than those old curlers my mom had!! But she didn't seem to mind, and slept fine at night and so on.
And the way that it was pulled so tight, I thought it would be bad for the hair and inhibit the growth, but when I took the ponytails out the hair was very soft and non-tangly.
I am far from a hair expert, but did want to say to just make sure that the hair is not so tight that the skin puckers (you would notice - it pulls it in to little bumps and can cause infection or hair loss). I pull dd's pretty tight, but always double check on that. My dd sleeps with her hair done. I've never had her sleep in barrettes or with beads that her head would have to lay on though. I know I've heard some moms take their dd's hair out every night and put in sleep braids....personally, I can't imagine.
