Many of you know that I am a quilt teacher and an avid quilter.
One of the things I'm trying to do is to grow as an artist using quilting as my main medium.
I've been wanting to do something which is about my experiances of being young and pregnant, relinquishing, living with that decision, reunion and so on.
An idea someone brought up in another thread was having everyone do a block which represented something significant along our journey and putting them together somehow...
So here is one idea I have, this would be a good thread if others have input and then maybe we can make this happen...
One idea:
We get a group who want to participate.
Everyone comes up with a block idea in let's say 9"x9" format (or we could do something unconvential like 4" x9" or something like that). Can be ANYTHING, with images, with words, with traditional piecing, with colors, whatever!
Everyone makes their blocks - enough so that everyone in the group gets one from everyone else in the group (are you with me still?).
We put together our quilts however we want to, photograph them and post them up on a webpage.
Of course there are many variations on this. Everyone could do their own block that they keep larger, and then the trade blocks could be smaller variations and so on and so on.
What do you think?
Have I lost it completely this time?
Is there interest?
I would be interested, it would mainly come down to how many blocks I would need to make. And it couldn't happen until after Christmas.

I think it is a really cool idea. I have never done any real quilting before...I know how to sew, though...I think I could probably learn to quilt.
OK so I was thinking along the same lines, quantum, only I think one could make the squares any size. There could be fabric fillers added if needed to make it fit together in a square. I think things work out really well when there aren't restictions only that it be about the birthmom experience. We would make only one square. Just be something as simple or as complex as you like. The more people that contribute the better. Also, It would be good if each person that contributed got to work on the actual quilting of the completed top. We could mail it around. We might hold a raffle and donate the money to benefit children or advocacy or something. Well, just some thoughts.
I'm in. :) I don't have a lot of spare time though. If I don't have to do more than say 1-2 squares it shouldn't be a problem.
That probably makes more sense Holly, less work in the sense of only one block per person, it would be cool for each person who contributed a block to get to see the finished top and quilt at least their square!
and I love the idea of raffling it off for something!
Seems like after Christmas would be a good time to seriously start on this, so we can throw ideas around in the meantime.

i have a few images floating around in my head but haven't really pinned one down i can make a square out of yet. hopefully we can get enough people on to make it interesting.
I feel like such a dunce...I don't know how to quilt. I've always wanted to learn, but just haven't gotten around to it. Both of my maternal great-grandmothers were avid quilters, and I treaure the quilts that were passed down to me. I've never been great at sewing, although I love doing needlepoint.
Raven, I can't sew clothing to save my life, but I love quilting. I also love needlework. You should give it a try!
Maybe this is your opportunity to try. This isn't a project that will be judged for quality, it's about expressing feeling.
I can help as much as possible online, heck I'm a quilt teacher remember!

I know how to make blocks, no big deal.... But I was going to incorporate my lacework into it instead.... how do you feel about the use of mediums outside of fabric?
Its about self expression. Do what you feel but it would need to be able to be incorperated in a quilt. Lace would work well. It might be like a collage also. For those that don't sew, there are craft techniques that allow you to transfer photos on cloth. you could also paint or write on cloth.
I say as long as it's attached to a base fabric that can be sewn together with other blocks, anything goes!
(or nearly anything).

Tatting, wow! I certainly admire that craft. It kills me to see hand made lace in antique shops for next to nothing!
The thought of the work and love gone into it.
