Hi,
I am a 30 year old single teacher who would like to start exploring the option of adoption. Although I am single I reside with both of my parents who would be an active part of the child's life. I would like to adopt a female child under the age of 5 but preferbly under the age of 2. Could someone please provide me a list of countries that would allow me to adopt as a single parent and not require international travel?
Thank you

I don't think Ethiopia allows singles to adopt anymore, although they might make an exception for older children or special needs children. Check out the country guidelines on RainbowKids.com Adoption Information, Support, Child Photolistings, Articles and Resources and also go to the U.S. state department's website at www.usdos.gov & look under intercountry adoption. I think all of the countries do require the adopting parent to travel but some require much shorter trips than others.
Ethiopia technically allows singles to adopt healthy babies but many agencies are putting restrictions on it. Mainly because during the Fall, the Ethiopian officials review their adoption laws and make any changes. Right now, Ethiopia is considering not allowing singles to adopt and many orphanage directors are putting limits on singles. Most agencies don't want singles to start the process and then later find out they cannot adopt.
So with that being said, if your open to special needs, Ethiopia might be a good option for you. Otherwise, you might have a hard time finding an agency to work with - although is not impossible if your persistence.
Right now, international adoption is in "survival mode" as many viable countries have closed their programs. Many countries like Vietnam and Guatemala were once very good choices for single parents but now, they are no longer open.
Some countries that might be a good option for you are would be Russia, Bulgaria and maybe Kazakhstan if your open to a long in-country stay and multiple trips. Otherwise, you might want to consider foster care adoption, domestic infant adoption or sperm donation.
As Sharon said earlier, almost all countries require international travel now. However, some countries require only one/two short trip and some agencies might offer an option of child escort. Bulgaria, for instance accepts single moms and will only require first short trip (under a week) to meet and bond with the child and later your child can be escorted to you after all the paperwork is done. Bulgaria program is also considered to be one of the "affordable" ones. Russia and Azerbaijan accept single moms under 50 as well but both countries will require longer trips. Hungary will be an option if you are open to some special needs or older kids. Uganda is also an option but it's not one of the stable programs.
