Nearly 2 years ago I got some feedback on dd's hair - and despite my best intentions, her hair was not in good shape. I was doing puffs every morning, they were cute but she had some breakage issues. So I got some advice from a friend and started doing her hair once a week, I can't cornrow but I had some really good double-strand twists going in. Sometimes I'd do a 2-strand twist style - either way cute. My grilfriend said once a week and condition daily.
But when I see on these sites, people are talking about re-braiding daily - really? I thougth part of the problem was that I was over doing her hair.
Then this summer I was on a trip and saw a cute and easy hairstyle - 6-8 bog box braids, each one with a ballee. Nice and easy. Should this style be re-braided daily? Brushed daily? I thought I was suposed to avoid daily brushing. My girl is cute but I want to make sure her hair is healthy too.
btw - just got matched with a aa/na boy, so exicted about the match, but happy not to have to fight over 2 hair-dos!

CONGRATS on your match!!!!! Can't say much about the braids....I DO comb/brush their hair daily, but we almost always do pigtails...or banding (as I call it). I can't cornrow; and when my friend put their hair in beads (all over) it looked great, but seemed to damage their hair once it was out. The girls also didn't want to repeat the beads because they didn't like sleeping on them. Sooo, can't help you a lot on the braiding; but I wanted to congratulate you!!!!
(Slightly OT) How soon before your new one is home?
Sincerely,
Linny
Linny - the pigtails, they are not tied on the end closest to the head, just banded at the end of the braid?
on the match - it's an older, not younger, he's 7 and been in foster care for a few years. I'm reading everythign I can on attachment (same therepeutic foster home for 2 years now). We matched last month and get to talk twice a week - he's in state but far away. We're traveling to meet him in 2 1/2 weeks, have a ton of meetings w/ state, treatment team, school. Will get to hang out with him for the weekend as well. After that we'll get to talk about transition. My husband and older daughter are cc/na and younger daughter full aa. When we sent the forever family photo album he was especially pleased to see that H looked like him.

Joskimo, I am far from a hair expert, but no - we definitely do not take down and brush hair here every day. My dd will be eight in December and the hairstyle with the big twists with ballies is our typical 'do'. About midweek, I cut out the rubber bands, add more hair product and re-do the same style that she is wearing - maybe changing up the parts a bit. Every day, I do use braid spray/spray conditioning product. Her hair is mid back when pulled straight and seems to be in fairly good condition. I cannot fathom daily styling.
First congrats! Are you referring to the comment I made on the Angie thread? I was discussing what I do personally for DD's hair. She came to us with baby fuzz, and I do what I see as best to help her hair fill in, and hopefully get longer. Combing everyday is based on the style. Brush the sides of the hair is based on using a very "soft" bristle brush to the sides, she has fly a way hair. Now I do this if we are going out somewhere and we all need to be more presentable. A comb can do the same. A brush is not used extensively. Everyone has to do what works best for them, and if the kid's hair stays nice, and healthy then something is going right. :-) Hope all works out !
